IMERYS Performance Minerals & Pigments Presents “Benefits of Mineral Additives in Fibers” at INDA 2007

Atlanta, GA, October 26, 2007 – Dr. Larry McAmish, from the Imerys Performance Minerals North America Technology Center, presented his paper titled “Benefits of Mineral Additives in Fibers” at the International Non-woven Technical Conference in Atlanta, GA on September 25, 2007. Dr. McAmish’s paper was based on multiple trials conducted at the University of Tennessee evaluating the use of mineral additives in non-woven products.

The paper summarized the results of this research, which demonstrated the feasibility of incorporating up to 20% surface treated calcium carbonate into fibrous non-woven products such as spun bond and melt blown webs. The addition of minerals into non-woven webs had the same effect on the strength properties as is generally observed in filled films, with slightly reduced tensile strength, offset by improved impact strength. There were also novel effects on other physical properties due to the benefits from higher density, thermal conductivity, and static charge associated with minerals versus polyolefin resins.

David Steinberg, Plastics Market Manager North America, commented “The work of Dr. McAmish allows us to explore new opportunities for minerals in non-woven materials. These novel effects may result in the development of improved non-woven products, such as spun bond ground covers that do not float, non-wovens with improved filtration and wipes with increased dust pickup capability.”
