Imerys Performance Minerals sites opened their doors to the public on European Minerals Day 2009
From Friday 15 to Sunday 17 May, 2009, in line with European Minerals Day, a range of events – plant and quarry tours, presentations of site restoration and environmental projects – was organised by Imerys Performance Minerals across Europe. The aim was to raise the public awareness of the work done by the minerals industry.
The protection of biodiversity was the key focus for visitors to the Imerys Performance Minerals sites, with schools, local communities and the press getting an opportunity to discover examples of the flora and fauna found on the restored mining sites.
More than 600 visitors attended the open days at the five Performance Minerals sites participating in the Minerals Day throughout Europe; Carrara in Italy, Villers in France, Beverley, Wheal Martyn & Littlejohns in the UK.
Feedback from the local communities has been very positive and all visitors were pleased to have the opportunity to see our operations.
The 2009 European Minerals Day proved to be an excellent way to inform, educate and stimulate the general public about the importance of the minerals sector in providing raw materials that are essential for so many everyday products. Imerys Performance Minerals were delighted to be able to participate in the event.
